Who killed my father

Upcoming performances

  • No upcoming performances

Father and son have lost contact because of the son's orientation. Now the son wants to do what he can to understand and defend his father.
Who killed my father is a newly written, explosive monologue by Edouard Louis about class differences and the mechanisms in society that create inferiority and worn-out bodies. Edouard Louis filters all this by telling his father's story. How do political decisions affect the lives and bodies of the vulnerable in society?

In 2024, Agder Nye Teater will create an expressive stage version of the story, mixing theater and dance. On stage, the audience will meet actor Olav Waastad from the National Theatre, who in 2022 was named best male actor of the year by the Hedda jury. He collaborates with Arendals-based director Magnus Sparsaas, dancer Charlott Utzig and Agder Nye Teater in this highly topical production. Agder Nye Teater has made theater in Arendal since 2020 and is behind the productions Mother and Child, White Heart and Hundreds of Children in Wild Battle.

More about the show

With his three recent novels, Edouard Louis has renewed the discussion about class differences and linked it to the growing popularity of populist protest parties. The search for quick solutions, clear enemy images and excuses challenges democracy. Who Killed My Father is the third book in a trilogy about growing up working class in rural France. The first book is about being queer in a small place, the longing for liberation and the confrontation and break with one's own family. But in the latest book, it is the reunion with his family and a speech in defense of a working class he has left behind that forms the framework for analyzing his upbringing and his father's life. At a time of weakening social rights, growing inequalities and diminished awareness of the structural impact of class differences on an individual's life and sense of self, Louis' books are liberatingly direct about something that is both deeply personal and utterly universal.
