Source's sustainability focus

Sustainability in Kilden

Sustainability is an important topic for Kilden. We are committed to ecological, social and economic sustainability. We want to reduce our environmental footprint and contribute to a more sustainable future. Sustainability is a recurring principle in Kilden's strategy for the period 2021-2025 and has for several years been an integral part of both stage production, operations and decision-making processes. Going forward, we will work even harder to sharpen our environmental initiatives in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals..

Set design & props

The measures at Kilden are not just words and certifications, but founded in all parts of the organization. It already starts when a production is being set up. Kilden has facilitated the creation of sustainable scenography by encouraging the use of materials that can be reused or recycled, and we have also invested in 3D printers that can create details and props with minimal waste and environmental footprint.

The workshop

The workshop, which is behind the sets here in Kilden, facilitates the reuse of sets between different productions. Sets that are used in a performance can, with upgrades, be given new life in new productions. In some cases, the creations from the workshop can also be given new life outside the building.

At the time of writing, several of our previous creations can see new light at Europe's largest beach party, Palmesus.

The costume department responsible for Kilden's beautiful and spectacular costumes thinks about reuse all the way, and when a costume has outlived its role here in Kilden , the garment is donated to the city's amateur theater where it gets new life.

Transportation

Since our first Eco-Lighthouse certification, we have worked to ensure that our employees and partners travel as little as possible and as green as possible. That's why we work to replace physical meetings with digital meetings as much as possible, and if a digital meeting is not possible, we always try to use trains before planes, and bicycles before cars.

In collaboration with our good neighbors Kunstsilo and Knuden cultural school, Kilden has taken the initiative for climate-friendly transport solutions and facilitated an adventure trail with visual and acoustic elements with the aim of getting even more people to use their feet instead of the car.

To encourage employees at Kilden to make climate-friendly choices, we have also purchased electric bicycles that employees can borrow to see if bikes can replace cars.

Social sustainability

Kilden wants all sections of the population to experience high-quality art and culture and, through this, be part of a socially sustainable society. We also want to facilitate co-creative art where different groups participate together with our professional forces to create good art experiences. That's why Kilden has discount schemes so that as many people as possible can afford to attend performances. Kilden has several initiatives where we use art and culture to create better living conditions and quality of life in our region, which is why we are committed to reaching the population throughout Agder with our art, both physically and digitally.

Financial sustainability

Art and culture are an important part of our shared economy. Kilden is a significant employer and creates major direct and indirect economic ripple effects. Kilden is also an important contributor to creating an attractive city and region to live, work and invest in. Our citizen survey from 2022 showed that almost 70% of Agder's population believe that Kilden has made the region more attractive. Kilden also contributes to Kristiansand being an interesting destination for guests from Norway and abroad. Cultural tourists are some of the people who spend the most money in the local environment they visit.

Food and environment

Kilden has its own canteen and restaurant and prepares food for employees, the public and conference participants.

Both kitchens focus on locally produced, locally sourced food and will always strive to use organic produce where possible.

To minimize food waste, Kilden has joined the app "Too Good To Go" where leftover food from Kilden is sold at a very low price via the solution. Every week, several bags of food are collected for price- and environmentally conscious people in the region. Food with a short shelf life that is made in connection with conferences and events is usually returned to the canteen to be sold at a reduced price. Kilden strives to throw away as little food as possible.

Furthermore

We continue to work in Kilden, this is an ongoing process that is constantly evolving and adjusting in line with feedback, experiences and new updates on the technology front.

Kilden has been working for some time to minimize electricity consumption and has implemented a number of energy efficiency measures. Kilden's Operations Department will continue to work on smart control of the building, replacement of outdated light sources and other measures that will limit the consumption of electricity and heat.

At Kilden , we have our own suggestion box where small and large ideas are posted. Among other things, we are currently investigating how the roof of Kilden, an unused dead area, can be used for something positive. There are many suggestions and proposals such as vegetable gardens, solar panels and beehives have been mentioned.
