Kilden Opera (formerly Opera Sør) is an important bearer of the classical opera tradition, but we also want to be highly innovative. We believe that seeing old classical operas in a new way does not conflict with being a bearer of tradition. Kilden Opera produces and presents opera in various formats: full-scale operas, opera concerts, musical theater, chamber operas and guest performances. We associate ourselves with creative and recognized artists who can create the good art experiences that reach both a modern audience, as well as the classic opera audience. Kilden Opera focuses on ensuring that all the artists we invite to work at Kilden have optimal artistic working conditions. We are also conscious of giving young Norwegian singers the opportunity to grow as opera singers in interaction with more experienced international singers. Kilden Opera is a recognized, credible and respected producer and partner of music-related performing arts.
Since 2008, Kilden Opera has been under the direction of Frøydis Emilie Lind, former long-time director of the International Church Festival.
Kilden Opera is a member of the national network AdOpera! which works with the development, production expertise and dissemination of modern opera and musical theater for six of the country's opera companies. The network is managed by Bergen National Opera and is funded by the national budget.
The activities of AdOpera! are threefold: Development to strengthen the creative skills of creators and producers; Production to develop skills through collaboration between the parties; and a forum to strengthen members' knowledge of contemporary opera.
Since the network was established in 2004, AdOpera! has produced a number of works.
