Conductor: Ruth Reinhardt
Soloist: Karen Gomyo, violin
Leoš Janácek: Shalusi, overture (1894)
Johannes Brahms: Violin Concerto (1877)
Béla Bartók: Concerto for orchestra (1943)
Johannes Brahms' Violin Concerto was premiered by master violinist Joseph Joachim in Leipzig on New Year's Day 1879. The Violin Concerto is a masterpiece with a magnificent first movement, full of drama and melodic genius, an unbelievably beautiful middle movement and a finale reminiscent of burning gypsy music.
Hungarian Béla Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra from 1943 is characterized by a personal tonal language, based on the composer's lifelong interest and commitment to folk music. The work is orchestrated in a way that presents the entire ensemble's sound palette and highlights the various instrument groups in magically simple orchestral splendor!
It is a great pleasure to once again invite conductor Ruth Reinhardt and violinist Karen Gomyo, two superb musicians with brilliant careers.
