Chamber Concert, Fall 2022

CHAMBER CONCERT AT THE ARCHIVES

In this concert, we will hear two of the most important works written for string quartet.

Schubert’s legendary “Death and the Maiden” (1817) is based on a poem by the German poet Matthias Claudius about Death coming to take a young girl away. You’d be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful slow movement in a string quartet!

Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 8 is dedicated to “the victims of fascism and war” and was premiered in Leningrad in 1960.
