Mark Stone

The English singer Mark Stone has garnered widespread acclaim for his Wagner roles and is a so-called Heldenbariton, a dramatic bass-baritone—or “heroic baritone”—often associated with Wagner’s operas. He has performed as Alberich in Das Rheingold, the title role in Siegfried, Gunther in Götterdämmerung, and was, so to speak, ready to take the stage as Wotan in the Trondheim Symphony Orchestra and Opera’s production of Die Walküre in 2020 when the country went into lockdown.
In the spring of 2025, he will perform the role of Klingsor in *Parsifal* and the title role in *The Flying Dutchman* at Kilden Olavshallen. But Mark’s repertoire extends beyond Wagner. Later this season, he will also perform the roles of il Mostro in *Venere e Adone* (Salvatore Sciarrino) at the Hamburg State Opera and The Protector in *Written on Skin* (George Benjamin) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. On the concert stage this fall, he has performed Totentanz ( Thomas Adès) with the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the baton of the composer himself in Leipzig, Britten’s War Requiem at Westminster Cathedral with the Philharmonia Orchestra and The Bach Choir conducted by David Hill, as well as a semi-concertante version of M. Butterfly (Ruo Huang) with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Carolyn Kuan.
Mark is a graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and received the Decca Prize at the Kathleen Ferrier Awards in 1998.
