Crescendo and Friends of the Opera invite you to a lecture by Nils Harald Sødal. Sødal will discuss how to understand and experience classical music—a topic he wrote a book about in 2025.
Most people probably think of Kristiansand native Nils Harald Sødal (b. 1964) as an opera singer. But he is also a pianist, visual artist, and novelist, as well as a lecturer and professor of music at the University of Agder, and head of research at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts.
Those attending the lecture will gain a deeper understanding of the nature, meaning, structure, and significance of classical music. Through live musical performances, the audience will have the opportunity to delve into an art form that has shaped the Western world for over 400 years.
Sødal also offers specific tips on what to listen for in order to understand various musical expressions and descriptions, and provides excellent starting points for learning about the history of musical styles.
He will also discuss the relevance and legitimacy of classical music in our modern age, opening the door to interesting reflections and discussions.
