Crescendo and Friends of the Opera invite you to a lecture by Nils Harald Sødal. Sødal will discuss how to understand and experience classical music—a topic he wrote a book about in 2025.
What is it about classical music that still resonates with us hundreds of years after it was composed? What should we listen for? And how?
In this lecture, Nils H. Sødalattempts to uncover some of classical music’s secrets and reveal its various layers—layers that become more apparent if you have the tools to unlock them. Through stories, humor, song, the grand piano, and lively musical examples, Sødal opens up classical music from the inside.
Sødal has spent his entire life immersed in this world. He is a professor of music, served as a permanent soloist with the Norwegian Opera & Ballet for 15 years, and has performed on international opera stages and with all of Norway’s professional symphony orchestras. In 2025, he published the book *Understanding and Experiencing Classical Music*, written specifically to open the door to classical music in new ways.
He is joined by singer Benedikte Sofie Ribe, who has extensive stage and concert experience from various opera houses and concert venues. Together, they bring the music to life: They narrate, sing, and play, taking classical music down from its pedestal without detracting from its grandeur.
