Gengangere is one of Ibsen's main works and his most controversial play. When it is now staged on Kilden's main stage, it is with a dream composition of inspiring artists, outstanding actors and strings from Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra.
Together they bring to life an intense family drama that examines what happens to us when we submit to society's norms, duties and expectations - instead of following our own dreams, talents or needs.
Ibsen wrote the play in response to the criticism he received after A Doll's House, in which the character Nora leaves her husband and children in pursuit of her own life. Now he wanted to give the audience a woman who did the opposite - who stayed in her marriage despite betrayal and unhappiness.
But in many ways, this story turned out to be even more shocking. Here, Ibsen deals with a number of taboo topics such as criticism of religion, double standards, adultery, venereal disease and mercy killing. Perhaps most of all, he criticizes marriage. It is not the choice to leave the marriage that has the greatest consequences for Ibsen - but the choice to stay.
The title Gengangere comes from the repetition from generation to generation, and how the characters are drawn in by the ghosts of the past. It is not a single trauma that haunts the characters, but an entire social structure - transmitted through attitudes, silence and disease. What do we inherit biologically and what is shaped by the environment around us? What is in the body - and what is in the walls?
We are very happy to welcome director Mari Kjeldstadli back to Kilden. She has previously had great success with the staging of Jens Bjørneboe's novel Jonas in 2020 and Ibsen's Rosmersholm in 2022.
