The Story of Mary in the Quran: Ready for Agder

– The story of Mary in the Quran is a truly special little performance. It offers insight and a different perspective on one of our most well-known stories. In addition to an engaging script, the audience will also hear Arabic and Persian music, as well as something as rare as hymns sung in Aramaic, Jesus’ own language. This is something the audience in Agder shouldn’t miss, says Valborg Frøysnes, artistic director at Kilden .

The production, which received a rating of 6 and was described as both “beautiful and important” in *Fædrelandsvennen*, is based on the figure of Mary as portrayed in the Quran and Islamic tradition. In the Quran, Mary’s story begins before she is even born and concludes with the infant Jesus speaking from his cradle.

The story of Jesus’ mother is told through Mehda Zolfaqari’s narration and composer Nawar Alnaddaf’s music. Storyteller Mehda Zolfaqari hopes the performance will shed light on what she herself considers a powerful and inspiring figure in the history of religion:

“Maria was a brave woman who dared to defy convention. In many ways, she has been an inspiration in my life,” she says, adding that she hopes the story will help foster understanding, and continues:

– There’s a lot of focus on the differences within society and between religions. This story might turn that on its head a bit and instead highlight some of the things we have in common.
