The Requiem in D minor from 1791 is Mozart’s (1756–1791) final composition—a work he did not live to complete before his death, and which was finished by his student. The unusual circumstances surrounding the commission and the temporal proximity between the work—a requiem for the deceased—and Mozart’s untimely death have given rise to numerous and vivid myths. This story provides an exciting starting point for a collaborative project between Abup—the Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health at Sørlandet Hospital—and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra.
Kick Off is Abup’s program for young people who are struggling themselves, or who have family members dealing with mental health issues and/or substance abuse. We have invited young people from these groups to collaborate with author Rune Belsvik and write lyrics for the choral movements of Mozart’s Requiem. Several writing workshops were held during the winter and spring of 2016. The texts are based on the young people’s own lives—including their challenges, joys, longings, and hopes—and are thematically linked to the Latin texts in the choral movements.
The requiem, with new lyrics, will be performed by the full Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra and a choir consisting of over 100 young people from high schools in the region, primarily the music programs at Vågsbygd High School in Kristiansand, Dahlske High School in Grimstad, and Kristen High School in Vennesla. The rehearsals are part of the schools’ own curriculum for the fall of 2016, with joint rehearsals in the winter of 2016/2017 and during concert week (week 18). The enthusiastic conductor Ragnar Rasmussen will visit the schools to get to know the students and to ensure a shared understanding of the work.
The performance of Mozart’s Requiem in 2017 will take place on May 5 at 7:30 p.m.[dfd_spacer screen_wide_resolution="1280" screen_wide_spacer_size="60" screen_normal_resolution="1024" screen_tablet_resolution="800" screen_mobile_resolution="480" screen_normal_spacer_size="40" screen_tablet_spacer_size="40" screen_mobile_spacer_size="40"][dfd_blog_posts items="single" single_custom_post_item="52571" items_offset="20" columns="3" image_width="900" image_height="600" grid_sort_panel="off" enabled_category="off" enabled_comments="off" enabled_anim_com_like="off" style="standard" layout_type_grid_carousel="fitRows" loop_elements_heading="" layout_settings_heading="" enabled_elements_heading="" title_t_heading="" title_font_options="tag:div"][dfd_blog_posts items="single" single_custom_post_item="52561" items_offset="20" columns="3" image_width="900" image_height="600" grid_sort_panel="off" enabled_category="off" enabled_comments="off" enabled_anim_com_like="off" style="standard" layout_type_grid_carousel="fitRows" loop_elements_heading="" layout_settings_heading="" enabled_elements_heading="" title_t_heading="" title_font_options="tag:div"][dfd_spacer screen_wide_resolution="1280" screen_wide_spacer_size="60" screen_normal_resolution="1024" screen_tablet_resolution="800" screen_mobile_resolution="480" screen_normal_spacer_size="40" screen_tablet_spacer_size="40" screen_mobile_spacer_size="40"]
