Composer Kristine Tjøgersen

Kristine Tjøgersen (b. 1982) often draws inspiration from nature in her compositions, and she asks herself: How do we view nature today, and how can I, as a composer, convey an experience of nature and the senses through music?

The Wolpertinger is a mythical creature said to inhabit the Alpine forests of southern Germany. It has a body composed of various animal parts—usually wings, antlers, a tail, and fangs—all attached to the body of a small mammal. In many parts of the world, there are descriptions of similar creatures, such as the Rasselbock in the Thuringian Forest, the Dilldapp in the Alemannic region, the Austrian Raurakl, the American Jackalope, and the Swedish Skvader.

In this work, I have transformed the orchestra into an entirely new sonic entity, inspired by the taxidermists who created the myth of the Wolpertinger. Sounds from various animals, including the koala, African fish owl, elephant, wild boar, capercaillie, flying fox, Tasmanian devil, and hummingbird, have been combined to form a new entity within the orchestral format.

Humor, precision, beauty, the grotesque, wildness, and rhythmic energy are words that can describe this work. The work also serves as a metaphor for humanity’s need for imagination and daydreaming, and I want to transport the audience to a magical forest where there is room for both the bizarre and the beautiful.

Soloist Denis Kozhukhin

Belgian pianist Denis Kozhukhin, winner of the first prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels in 2010, is considered one of the most outstanding pianists of his generation. He has performed with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, and the Staatskapelle Berlin, and is a sought-after guest at festivals such as Verbier, Gstaad, and the BBC Proms.

In recent years, Kozhukhin has collaborated closely with a number of European orchestras, served as artist-in-residence with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra, and appeared as a soloist with the Oslo Philharmonic and the Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. He regularly gives solo recitals at some of Europe’s and the world’s most prestigious concert venues.

In the 2023/24 season, he will mark the anniversaries of Ligeti, Schoenberg, and Lutosławski, performing several of their piano concertos. As a Pentatone artist, he has released a number of critically acclaimed recordings featuring music by Franck, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Brahms, and Prokofiev, among others. Kozhukhin studied in Madrid and at the Piano Academy on Lake Como.
