PROGRAM
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart:String Quintet No. 2 in C minor, K. 406 (1787)
Edvard Grieg:String Quartet in G minor, Op. 27 (1877/78)
The Austrian Johann Georg Albrechtsberger and the Italian Luigi Boccherini were both contemporaries of Mozart. One thing they certainly all had in common was a fondness for string quintets with two violas. The former composed a total of 19 quintets, and the Italian cello virtuoso 12. Mozart wrote “only” six quintets for this ensemble, and the C minor quintet is nothing more than a string arrangement of his earlier Wind Serenade.
