‘- I love film music’
Violinist with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra, Henriette Lindstad Børven:
– Not all orchestra musicians dare to say it out loud, but I actually love film music!
On April 5, Swedish author and musician Orcar Säfström and the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra invite you to an evening dedicated to the world of film music.
– “This genre of music makes classical music accessible to a wider audience,” says Henriette enthusiastically.
Batman and Brahms
The concert will feature pieces from Batman, Star Wars, and Indiana Jones. For orchestra musicians who usually play Brahms, Mozart, and Bach, it’s a different kind of day at work; for the film-loving violinist, it’s a dream evening.
“I was so happy when I saw we were going to play the music from *The Avengers*—the intro is absolutely magical! There’s so much great music tonight, but I’m most looking forward to *The Avengers*,” says Henriette.
Symphonic music and film have enjoyed a close and fruitful relationship for many years. Just a few well-placed bars of music can set the mood and enhance the impact of what we see on screen. As befits a forward-thinking orchestra, the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (KSO) has several exciting projects under its belt that go beyond the traditional boundaries typically associated with a symphony orchestra.
“It’s our job to perform music that draws people in; film music helps showcase the orchestra to a wider audience. Since Pål Svendsberget became the director of the KSO, there have been more projects like this, and both I and the audience really appreciate that,” says Henriette.

A live orchestra
One might wonder what draws people away from their screens and into the concert hall to listen to music composed specifically for the screen. Henriette, of course, has the answer.
“Hearing a symphony orchestra live in konsertsalen is something entirely different. “We are a living organism that breathes, that lives, and that delivers music that washes over you like a huge wave with tremendous force,” says Henriette with great passion.
There’s no doubt that there’s a lot of great film music out there, but there’s one particular genre that makes Henriette’s heart beat a little faster.
– I’m really fond of how classical music is used in sci-fi movies. The music often plays a prominent role in the plot and helps enhance the overall experience. My daughter is too young to watch Star Wars, but we listen to the music and discuss what she thinks is happening in the story when she hears it. Is it happy music? Is someone fighting? Are we underwater?” Henriette asks rhetorically.
Following the music
Henriette is one of 67 full-time musicians with the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra. Does she have a different relationship with music than most of us? Does she view movies differently since she works with music almost every single day?
“I often check out the music after watching a movie I like—that’s what happened when I saw, and heard, *Star Wars*. When Rey first appears on screen, a fantastic piece called ‘Rey’s Theme’ plays. Now I can put the movie on just to hear that piece,” says Henriette, making no secret of her enthusiasm for the film series.
By all accounts, April 5 is shaping up to be a great day at work for Henriette. So all that’s left is to welcome you to konsertsalen a truly special evening—but hurry, there are only a few tickets left.
