Being multilingual, and living in a multilingual world, is part of everyday life for many people, but both the theater and the public space are usually monolingual. Language is closely linked to our own identity, self-understanding and how we are perceived by others.
How does language change us, our personality, our relationships, power relations, status and hierarchies? How does society meet us through language and how do we meet society? And what happens to close relationships when the linguistic starting point is different?
Together with three performers, Dæhlin wants to explore multilingualism using song, text, music, written language, dance, poetry and sound in a performance that moves beyond the classical framework of the theater.
Maritea Dæhlin works and lives in Norway and Mexico, and is a second generation Cameroonian. Her work ranges from theater to video, performance, sound and stage text. Her art is characterized by the multilingual, non-linear and sometimes absurd. Dæhlin holds a BA in Devised Theater with Digital Arts from Dartington College of Arts (2007-2010), was an Associate Artist at Black Box Theater (2021-2022) and is a recipient of the National Artist Grant. Her work has been nominated for the Norwegian Critics' Prize (2020) and the Hedda Prize (2022). Dæhlin last visited Kilden Teater in 2021 with the production I sør har de sjøen.
