On Thursday, November 29, Kilden will welcome Kilden Rachlin, a world-class violinist and conductor, as he makes his debut as principal guest conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra (KSO) with the concert “Sinfonia Concertante.” Julian Rachlin and the KSO will perform a total of three concerts together in Konsertsalen Kilden 2018–19 season. In addition to the debut concert, the program includes the New Year’s Concert “An Evening in Vienna, with a Russian Twist” (January 9–12) and “Pictures at an Exhibition” (January 17). In addition to conducting, Rachlin will perform as soloist in two of the concerts.

“We are very proud of our collaboration with Julian Rachlin. He is a world-class violinist with immense musical talent. The chemistry between Rachlin and the KSO is excellent, so everything is in place for some truly memorable concert experiences,” says Hans Bodin, program director at the KSO.

More about the Julian Rachlin concerts at Kilden performing arts centre:

November 29, Sinfonia Concertante: Julian Rachlin and violist Sarah McElravy are the soloists in W.A. Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante, considered by many to be his finest solo work.  Sarah McElravy is also the soloist in Paul Hindemith’s short, contemplative piece “Trauermusik,” and the program features Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture and W.A. Mozart’s Symphony No. 36, which the brilliant composer created in just three days during a stay at Count Thun’s castle on the outskirts of Linz in the fall of 1783.

January 9–12, New Year’s Concert 2019: An Evening in Vienna, with a Russian Twist. Julian Rachlin is a great fan of the traditional New Year’s Day concert in Vienna. He has created his own version, in which Johann Strauss’s music is complemented by excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker,” among other pieces, and Julian will also perform some virtuoso violin solo gems by Fritz Kreisler and others. We are pleased to present Herborg Kråkevik as the host.

January 17, Pictures at an Exhibition: Rachlin conducts one of the most colorful and entertaining works in music history. Modest Mussorgsky’s piano piece “Pictures at an Exhibition,” inspired by the paintings of his friend, the artist Emil Hartmann, has become a great favorite among both audiences and musicians in Maurice Ravel’s orchestration. Before intermission, Russian cellist Boris Andrianov performs as soloist in two melodious works by Peter Tchaikovsky: Andante Cantabile and Variations on a Rococo Theme.

About Julian Rachlin

Julian Rachlin, who was born and raised in Lithuania, moved to Vienna at an early age, where he studied with Pinchas Zuckerman, among others. In 1988, at just 14 years old, Julian won the EBU’s “Young Musicians” competition (Leif Ove Andsnes, three years his senior, came in second!). This marked the beginning of a brilliant career as a soloist. Over the past two decades, Rachlin has increasingly devoted himself to conducting and currently holds the position of Principal Guest Conductor with both The Royal Northern Sinfonia in Newcastle and the Turku (Åbo) Philharmonic Orchestra.
