Each installment of the Music Salon features a lecture on music history as part of the Kultur/Retur series, presented by Sigbjørn Nedland, but opens with a conversation about music between Kjetil Nordhus and a special guest.

The Music Salon has often taken us on journeys across the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans. This time, the journey begins in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, with the distinctive gliding tones that became the very hallmark of Hawaiian music.

We will explore the history of the Hawaiian guitar and how the instrument conquered the world, left a distinct mark on American country music, and found a particularly strong foothold in Asia—not least in India, where a distinct instrument was eventually developed, inspired by the Hawaiian guitar’s style and sound. And as if that weren’t enough: Also Thor Heyerdahl makes an appearance in the Music Salon—as the inspiration for a unique musical and artistic movement centered on the Pacific: “Tiki-pop.”
