Each installment of the Music Salon features a lecture on music history as part of the Kultur/Retur series, presented by Sigbjørn Nedland, but opens with a conversation about music between Kjetil Nordhus and a special guest.
The title of this Music Salon is taken from Stian Carstensen — a Norwegian expert on and virtuoso performer of Balkan musical traditions. The audience can expect accordions, brass bands, and music at breakneck speeds, often built on complex time signatures that challenge even the most rhythmically adept listener.
But the style is both captivating and fascinating, and throughout history this music has thrilled audiences far beyond the Balkans. We will also take a closer look at its connections to neighboring cultural traditions in, among other places, Romania and Turkey —countries that have inspired both Balkan musicians and a number of composers throughout the ages, including none other than Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
