“There are no moral or immoral books. Books are either well-written or poorly written. That is all.”
Oscar Wilde in the preface to *The Picture of Dorian Gray*

The young and handsome Dorian Gray has a portrait painted of himself. Like Narcissus, he falls in love with his own reflection and longs for eternal youth and beauty. His wish comes true, and Dorian Gray throws himself into a reckless lifestyle without a thought for the consequences. The portrait ages, and as the years pass, the image takes on increasingly depraved and
gruesome features—revealing his true nature.

When the book was published in 1890, it was considered immoral. In a Victorian era characterized by facades and strict social norms, Oscar Wilde unscrupulously depicted human vanity and the darkest depths of the human soul.
