Norway, 1905. The union with Sweden has dissolved, and the country is on the cusp of a new era. In a family reeling from the sudden death of the father, everyone is trying to find a way forward.
Hamlet loses his footing when his mother, Gertrude, seeks comfort from Claudius, his father’s brother. He himself feels he must take his father’s place. While the others try to move on, his suspicion grows: Who can he trust?
In this version of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, the story is told almost without words. Movement, images, and sound drive the action, while withered flowers and faded colors make the family’s grief visible. In a home slowly falling into disrepair, memories, fears, and reality blur into one another.
Hamlet is an intimate story of a mother and a son, bound together by love and torn apart by grief. What must we let go of in order to move forward?
